The Bridgend Centre has been working alongside the Making Business Greener Campaign in support of its Big Lottery grant application. The Big Lottery Fund now places greater emphasis on addressing climate change in the projects it backs. As part of this, it requires applicants to submit a Carbon Action Plan, demonstrating a wider commitment to reducing carbon emissions and aligning with the UK’s net-zero goals.
An independent charity, the Bridgend Centre plays a vital role in the Bollington community, offering
a welcoming and inclusive environment. It provides key support to individuals with mental health
conditions, learning disabilities, and older people, who might otherwise face isolation or
vulnerability. The Centre is located in a historic two-storey stone building, which houses a retail
space selling books, clothing, household items, and woodcrafts made on-site. It also features a
meeting room for 12-15 people and a smaller library.
The creation of the Carbon Action Plan involved a desk-based study, a remote audit via video
conferencing, and discussions with the Centre’s manager, Rebecca Lea. The plan detailed the
sustainability measures already in place and offered a timeline of further recommendations to
reduce the environmental impact of future projects and Centre services.
The recommendations spanned several key areas, including improvements to energy efficiency,
water conservation, and the adoption of low and zero-carbon technologies (LZCs). It also highlighted
the use of sustainable materials and potential landscape improvements. Additionally, a Sustainability
Policy was established to consolidate the Centre’s goals and objectives.
This plan serves as an essential tool for fostering engagement and ownership among Trustees, staff,
volunteers, and the wider community. Through these efforts, the Bridgend Centre not only enhances
its environmental practices but also continues to lead by example in promoting low-carbon
behaviours and environmental stewardship.
