Be Buckfastleigh’s social supermarket fights waste on a weekly basis by redistributing 200kg of surplus food (purchased from Fare Share) to the local community; now the Social Supermarket has gone even further to flight climate change by using a grant from the Naturesave Trust to purchase and distribute eco-friendly and reusable products to the community in Buckfastleigh.
The fund means that the Social Supermarket can offer more support to people locally by supplying them with sustainable products that will not only save money but also the earth. Items that will be supplied include menstrual cups, water metal bottles, cleaning supplies, bamboo toothbrushes, hygiene products, and safety razors. The fund also enabled the Social Supermarket to purchase a new more environmentally friendly fridge.
These products will be available over the winter period to all people that attend the Social Supermarket meaning they will enable people to save even more money at a time when other costs (like energy bills) will be rising.
Di Mallen (lead volunteer of the Social Supermarket) stated “Here at the Social Supermarket we are all about saving food and products from landfill, and to encourage our users to use eco products where possible so we all do our bit for the environment for a future for all. It is going to be fantastic to be able to offer some of these products for people to tray and then hopefully go on to use on a regular basis.
The Social Supermarket runs every Tuesday between 15:30-17:00 at Buckfastleigh Rangers Football and Social Club for a suggested donation of £3.50 local households get at least 10 items usually to the value of £40.
